During the Galungan Kuningan festivals, the Barong (there are many types, including barong ket, barong macan, and barong bangkal) wanders from door to door (nglawang) cleansing the territory of evil influences.

Kintamni with mountain and lake view

I often tell people that you can’t experience the true Bali unless you travel north a bit… in this case north meant jumping in an Avanza and driving an hour and a half uphill from Sanur on windy roads to Lakeview Hotel and Restaurant situated in Penelokan village on the crater-rim of the Mount Batur caldera. Mount Batur is technically the whole ancient volcano, but today refers to the smaller volcano emerging out of the ancient caldera. An hour and a half may seem a distance to travel for lunch, but I can assure you it is worth it.

Halfway into the journey, the AC was switched off and windows wound down and when we reached our destination our wobbly legs were thrilled to meet with the cool mountain air. Welcomed warmly by the restaurant staff, we walked through the main hall where a huge buffet spread was laid out and made our way to the outside seating area where we were hit with by the scenery – a breathtaking 1,215 metre above sea level panoramic view of Lake Danu with Gunung Batur towering above her. The view brings you back in touch with Mother Nature – a feeling we sometimes lose in our hectic modern lives.

Safety and customer satisfactions are the things that become the main priority of each water sports operator in Bali.

Lunch at local restaurant

Ask around for the most popular places to eat in Bali, and frequent mention would be made of ‘warungs’ – simple roadside dining spots presenting their own specialty cuisine. Definitely not the modern restaurants that have borrowed and fused the word ‘warung’ into their name, simply for the sake of branding, these warungs are authentic.

No doubt this list will cause debate but note that it is a breakaway from our list of trendy upscale restaurants, and it is more focused on those serving outright cheap and local food. We’ve also left out those that have shifted their market from local to tourists and somehow bloated their prices along the way.

These are all budget options with no fuss about fancy interior design, silver cutlery or cushioned chairs. If you don’t mind getting in line and practicing a bit of Indonesian (and Balinese!) body language in placing your order, then settling down in a non-air-conditioned space on plastic stools or wooden benches and tables, with toilet paper rolls for napkins, then you’re in for the ultimate local dining experience. The list will surely change in the future but here are our most popular 10 to date, each listed under Bali’s most favourite dishes to try while on holidays here.

Pandawa Beach

Pandawa Beach, locally referred to as ‘Pantai Pandawa’, is a great addition to Bali’s collection of gorgeous beaches, located on Bali’s southern Bukit Peninsula.

The fine, one-kilometre coastal stretch is located in the village of Kutuh, only five kilometres west from the Samabe Bali Suites & Villas and eight kilometres south from the main hub of the BTDC complex in Nusa Dua.  ‘Hidden’ behind large carved limestone cliffs that reveal wide views to the Indian Ocean, Pandawa Beach was once also dubbed as ‘Secret Beach’ and it was officially opened in 2012, fast-gaining popularity among local weekenders and international visitors.

Padang-padang Beach

Padang Padang Beach, locally referred to as Pantai Labuan Sait, is one of Bali’s most famous surf spots, located on the north-western coast of the island’s Bukit Peninsula, and just a kilometre southwest of the Anantara Bali Uluwatu.

This beach features an exotic setting; a simply stunning one hundred meter-long stretch of sand that is accessible down a flight of stairs through a unique hollow rock entrance. The surf has a steady set of barrels during good weather, attracting wave riders from around the world.

Part of the group of world-class surf spots that line the coast of the southern peninsula, Padang Padang Beach lies several kilometres in between Bingin and Uluwatu, among which surfers usually hop to interchangeably for a different set of challenges and another thrill for the day. This beach is also a regular spot for international surfing events, the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang being the most frequent.

Uluwatu Temple for sunset and Kecak Dance.

Take in Bali’s best sunset spot at Uluwatu Temple, a Balinese temple to the sea gods, with a commanding view of the ocean high on a cliff. The temple is part of a series of temples built to protect the island from evil spirits and is the permanent home to a family of friendly monkeys.

After exploring the temple and watching the sunset, experience one of Bali’s most famous cultural performances, the Kecak Fire Dance. Watch the Balinese act out a scene from the Ramayana with a mesmerizing trance chant, punctuated by exciting fire dances by performers in intricate costumes. An unforgettable evening of Balinese culture that the whole family can enjoy.

Dinner (Jimbaran Bay for sunset and fresh grilled sea food)

You’d be forgiven for thinking that all Jimbaran Bay had to offer was seafood on the beach- it is the main reason why people visit. But spare the time to sample some of the offerings from the local restaurants and you’ll be richly rewarded.

The main street that runs parallel to Jimbaran Bay is dotted with warungs that offer home style cooking that will make you wish you could stay in Jimbaran Bay forever. In the evenings, street carts appear and locals gather to grab some sate ayam (chicken sate) to takeaway or to wolf down a bowl of bakso before heading home. Linger a little longer in this small fishing village and you’ll fall under its spell like we did.
